Gemcitabine is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with DNA synthesis. It binds to the amide group of the enzyme topoisomerase II, which is required for DNA replication. Gemcitabine monophosphate disodium salt has been shown to have potent antitumor activity against a variety of carcinoma cell lines and has been used in the treatment of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. Studies have shown that gemcitabine monophosphate disodium salt can inhibit angiogenesis and may be useful as an anti-angiogenic agent.
