- α-D-Uridine
1-(α-D-Ribofuranosyl)uracil is a nucleoside that is metabolized in the liver to uracil. It is used as a prodrug for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). 1-(α-D-Ribofuranosyl)uracil has been shown to inhibit viral DNA synthesis and, consequently, viral replication. The drug also inhibits the formation of new T cells from stem cells. 1-(α-D-Ribofuranosyl)uracil has toxic effects on myeloid cells and can lead to myelosuppression. Pharmacological studies have shown that this drug can be effective against HIV when used in combination with other drugs.
