The acetamide group is substituted by a hydroxy group, which may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory activity. 6-O-(2-Acetamido-2-deoxy-b-D-glucopyranosyl)-D-galactopyranose has also been shown to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin beta (ILβ).
