2-Cyano-2-phenylacetic acid is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. It has a structural formula that is similar to that of a number of other aromatic hydrocarbons, such as phenylacetic acid. 2-Cyano-2-phenylacetic acid can be converted to serotonin by alkali hydrolysis or by amyloid protein. This conversion is catalyzed by serine proteases and methoxy groups, respectively. 2-Cyano-2-phenylacetic acid also reacts with copper ions to form a copper complex. 2-Cyano-2-phenylacetic acid has been shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on the activity of serine proteases, which are implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
