7-Oxooctanoic acid is a synthetic, polymeric anion that is used as a biocide in the treatment of paper and textiles to prevent bacterial growth. It has been shown to be effective at low concentrations against bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 7-Oxooctanoic acid is also used in the production of ion exchange resins for water softening or removal of hardness ions. The anions are made by reacting malonic acid with aluminium chloride in an organic solvent. The reaction time of this process can vary depending on the desired product - it takes 24 hours to produce anions with a molecular weight of 500 Da, but only 2 hours to produce anions with a molecular weight of 1500 Da.
