4-Chloro-2,2'-bipyridine (4-ClBP) is a luminescent compound that can be used as a building block for the synthesis of a wide range of compounds. 4-ClBP has been shown to react with ferrocene to form an adduct via the boronic acid linker. This reaction was found to be very selective, with only one product resulting from the cross-coupling of two molecules. The structures of 4-ClBP have also been determined by x-ray crystallography and revealed that this compound has a chlorine atom coordinated in a mononuclear site, which is unusual for aromatic compounds. The chlorine atom can be substituted with amines to produce highly reactive compounds.
