Product Information
2-(4-Chlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropan-1-ol (clopidogrel) is a nonsteroidal antiplatelet drug that is used to prevent and treat atheromatous heart disease. Clopidogrel inhibits the action of platelets by blocking the ADP receptor on their surface, preventing platelets from sticking together and forming blood clots. Clopidogrel also reduces the risk of stroke in patients who have had a recent transient ischemic attack or stroke. It was approved for use in the United States in 1997. Clopidogrel has been shown to inhibit the production of acetylsalicylate, which can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding.
Clopidogrel has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on atherosclerotic plaque formation as well as inhibiting blood clotting through inhibition of both thromboxane A2 synthesis and aggregation.
