Description:

Trimethylplatinum(IV) iodide is a bifunctional organometallic compound that contains both an acceptor and a donor. It has two isomers, cis- and trans-, which are distinguished by the orientation of the 4-cyanopyridine ligand. The cis-isomer is more stable than the trans-isomer due to its higher symmetry. Trimethylplatinum(IV) iodide reacts with molecular oxygen in the presence of light to form an intermediate, which then undergoes a disproportionation reaction to form elemental platinum and water. This reaction can be used for analytical purposes as well as for synthesizing other organometallic compounds. Structural analysis has shown that trimethylplatinum(IV) iodide has three nitrogen atoms, one of which is bonded to a benzyl group. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has also been used to confirm this structure.
