Product Information
1,4-Dibromo-2,3-butanediol (DBBD) is a chemical with the molecular formula C4H6Br2O. It is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as ether, chloroform and benzene. The compound can be recrystallized from anhydrous acetonitrile. 1,4-Dibromo-2,3-butanediol can be synthesized by reacting butyric acid with bromine in an acetonitrile solution at low temperature. The reaction vessel must be kept cool to prevent decomposition of the product. DBBD can be obtained as two stereoisomers: cis and trans. The cis form is more stable than the trans form because it has a lower energy state due to its planar configuration. Methanesulphonic acid reacts with the methyl ester group of DBBD to produce methanesulphonic
