2-Butyl-2-adamantanol is a methylated derivative of 2-adamantanol. The methyl group increases the conformational possibilities of the molecule, which may be due to the increased number of hydrogens that can form hydrogen bonds. 2-Butyl-2-adamantanol has been shown to exist in two different conformations and is in equilibrium between these conformations. The equilibrium constant, K, for this reaction is calculated to be 0.4. This equilibrium can be shifted by changing the concentration of reagents or lanthanide metal ions in solution or by using a different solvent.
