12-Phenyldodecanoic acid is a fatty acid that has been synthetized from the reaction of a phospholipid and an amino acid. It has antiviral potency against HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, and hepatitis C virus. The antiviral activity of 12-phenyldodecanoic acid may be due to its ability to inhibit viral replication by binding to the viral envelope glycoprotein gp120 or gp41. 12-Phenyldodecanoic acid also inhibits the synthesis of lipids in cells by competing with acyl chains for incorporation into lipids. This compound is found in wastewater treatment plants, where it could act as an antimicrobial agent.
