D-Lactose hydrate is a type of sugar that is the product of the hydrolysis of lactose, which is a carbohydrate. Lactose occurs in milk and dairy products and can be used as an energy source by many bacteria. D-Lactose hydrate has been shown to have a variety of biochemical properties, including its ability to inhibit ATP binding cassette transporter (ABC) and cellulase enzymes. D-Lactose hydrate has also been found to inhibit bowel disease in mice due to its effect on gut cells. It may also have anticancer effects.
