Benzyloxytrimethylsilane is a molecule that is used as a reactive functional group in organic synthesis. It can be used to prepare samples for chromatography and spectroscopy by cross-linking with the hydroxyl groups of other molecules, such as malonic acid. Benzyloxytrimethylsilane reacts with the carboxylic acid groups of polycarboxylic acids, such as malic acid, to form esters. The reaction between benzyloxytrimethylsilane and hydrogen fluoride forms an amide. This compound is also reactive towards the hydroxy group of alcohols and can be used in Friedel-Crafts reactions to form ethers or acetals from alkenes.
