2-Benzyl-1H-imidazole is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of other organic compounds. It can be prepared by reacting nitriles with acetals and then hydrolyzing the product to form an imidazole. The intramolecular reaction of 2-bromoacetaldehyde and 1,2-dibromobenzene produces 2-benzyl-1H-imidazole as a white solid. This method has been shown to be more efficient than the intermolecular reaction of nitriles with acetals. The synthesis of 2-benzyl-1H-imidazole using this method is shown below.
