4-(Methylsulfinyl)phenol (MSOP) is a chiral photoelectrochemical catalyst that has been shown to be effective in the electrochemical oxidation of aldehydes and sulfoxides. It is activated by light and has an optical activity that is enantiopure, giving it the ability to catalyze reactions between allylation. MSOP has also been used as a solid catalyst for the hydrogenation of ketones and alkenes. The reaction rate increases with increasing wavelength and fluence. This catalyst can be prepared from methylsulfonylbenzene (MSB), which can be synthesized from mesoporous silica spheres. MSB was first prepared in 1972, but it wasn't until 1990 that 4-(methylsulfinyl)phenol was discovered to have improved properties over other catalysts.
