Product Information
2-Amino-5-phenyl-thiophene-3-carboxylic acid (2APTC) is an anti-tuberculosis drug that belongs to the class of betaines. It is a potent inhibitor of the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 2APTC binds to the active site of the enzyme chloride channel, blocking it and preventing the entry of chloride ions into the cell. This prevents the formation of a negative charge inside the bacterial cell, which is necessary for its survival. 2APTC has been shown to be effective against drug resistant strains of tuberculosis and other bacteria in clinical trials.
