The phosphonium, hexadecyltriphenyl-, bromide (PHTPB) is a sensitive reagent that can be used to measure the free fatty acid content in biological samples. PHTPB is also a solid catalyst for the conversion of fatty acids into fatty alcohols. This reaction mechanism is thought to involve the formation of an intermediate cationic surfactant via hydrolysis, which then reacts with a second molecule of fatty acid to form a product containing two ester bonds. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique has been used to show that this process occurs at low concentrations of hydroxyl group (0.1 M). The kinetics and model system for the reaction have been studied and found to be consistent with those observed in EIS studies.END>>
