2-Ionone is a naturally occurring organic compound that is found in many plants and fruits. 2-Ionone has been shown to be carcinogenic in humans and has shown photochemical properties. This compound is commonly used as an industrial preparation, but also has physiological functions such as carotenoid biosynthesis. 2-Ionone has been used in vitro to study the interactions between steric factors and chain reactions with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA replication. It also inhibits microbial biotransformation of certain chemicals by rat liver microsomes. 2-Ionone can inhibit the activity of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase, which may lead to cancer, obesity, or Alzheimer's disease.
