Chromyl Chloride is a colorless gas with a boiling point at -30°C and a density of 2.6 g/L. It is highly soluble in water, yielding chloride yields of up to 98%. Chromyl Chloride is used for the production of chromium metal, chromium oxide, and other chromium compounds. This chemical has been shown to react with the hydroxyl group on a particle surface and form an ionic bond with the hydrochloric acid molecule. The reaction mechanism is still being investigated.
Chromyl Chloride gas can be produced by reacting carbon disulfide and hydrochloric acid in a flow system. The reaction can be represented as follows:
HCl + CS2 → Cl2 + HCS3
