Description:
Sodium 4-ethylbenzenesulfonate is a surfactant that can be used for the dissolution of organic substances. The reaction system consists of a chloride anion, a cationic surfactant, and a homologue. The constant for this system is
2.0 × 10-4 M. The interaction of the surfactant with the counterions leads to the formation of an ionic complex. This complex interacts with the water molecules, which results in increased solubility and surface tension. Sodium 4-ethylbenzenesulfonate is used as a nasal decongestant and has been shown to have an effect on myoglobin stability because it has been shown to inhibit myoglobin oxidation in vitro at concentrations less than 1 mM by reducing protein thiols.
