Angiotensin II is a peptide hormone that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. It is also known as a vasopressor and as an activator of the renin-angiotensin system. Angiotensin II is synthesized from the precursor protein angiotensinogen, which is cleaved by renin to form angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted to angiotensin II by the enzyme ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme). Angiotensin II is found in the lungs, kidneys, adrenal glands, brain and blood. The biological effects of angiotensin II are mediated by its receptor on cells which stimulates G proteins to activate phospholipase C activity. This leads to increased levels of inositol triphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG) which cause release of calcium ions from intracellular stores such as the endoplasmic
