Tetrasodium-meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphine dodecahydrate is a water-soluble porphyrin that absorbs ultraviolet light and emits fluorescent light. It has been shown to enhance tryptophan fluorescence in cancer tissues. Tetrasodium-meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphine dodecahydrate has been shown to have anticancer activity against skin cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species in the tumor tissue and cell membranes. The human serum albumin can act as a transport protein for this compound, which is able to enter cancer cells and cause an increase in redox potentials.
