Ethyl 3-methyl-2-nitro-3h-imidazole-4-carboxylate is an analogue of nitroimidazole that is metabolized to its active form, methyl 2-(2-nitroimidazolinyl)acetate. This analog has been shown to have cytotoxic effects against human and murine cells and also has alkylating properties. However, ethyl 3-methyl-2-nitro-3h-imidazole-4-carboxylate does not cause DNA damage in vitro and does not show prodrug activity in mice.
