Diethyl (4-chlorobenzyl)phosphonate is a potential use for cancer treatment. It inhibits cell proliferation by binding to the factor receptor and inducing apoptosis in cells. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of viruses, including HIV-1, herpes simplex virus type 1, and human papilloma virus. Diethyl (4-chlorobenzyl)phosphonate also shows potent antitumor activity and can be used to treat breast cancer. The mechanism of action is thought to be through inhibition of angiogenesis, which is the process by which new blood vessels form from existing ones. This inhibition leads to decreased microvessel density and decreased endothelial cell proliferation in tumor cells.
