Sodium acetate-D3 is an analog of sodium acetate that has been labeled with D3, which is a positron-emitting isotope. The labeling allows for more precise localization of the tumor during positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Sodium acetate-D3 has been shown to bind to fatty acids, amides and amino acids, which are all sources of energy for cancer cells.
