Methyl 9H-xanthene-9-carboxylate is a conformationally constrained synthon with a low flow rate. It has been shown that this compound can bind to anions, metal surfaces, and synthons in the gas phase. Methyl 9H-xanthene-9-carboxylate has been synthesized by reacting propantheline with acetonitrile in the presence of methyl iodide and sodium methoxide. This synthon has also been found to be magnetic, chromatographically active, and amenable to proton microscopy.
