Product Information
4-Hydroxymelatonin is a molecule that is produced in vivo by the enzyme ascorbate peroxidase. It has been shown to have antioxidative properties and may be able to reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde. 4-Hydroxymelatonin has been shown to inhibit the activity of mitochondrial peroxidase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide to produce ROS. 4-Hydroxymelatonin also inhibits the activity of catalase, an enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, leading to less ROS being produced.
4-Hydroxymelatonin has been shown to exhibit antioxidant effects in vivo through a functional theory. This theory states that antioxidants are able to donate electrons or hydrogen atoms from their unshared electron pairs or hydrogens on their molecules to free radicals. This donation prevents the formation of new radicals, thereby
