Dimethallyl carbonate is an organic solvent that is used in the allylation reaction. It is a liquid with a boiling point of 200 °C and a density of 1.04 g/mL at 20 °C. Dimethallyl carbonate is soluble in ether, chloroform, benzene, and other solvents. The allylation reaction uses less energy than the alkylation reaction because it does not require the breaking of bonds to generate the carbocation intermediate. Dimethallyl carbonate reacts with lithium to form an organolithium compound, which can then react with an allylic alcohol to form an allyl ether or ester.
