Ethyl 4-chloropicolinate is a potent antitumor agent that has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. It is classified as a cell cycle specific drug and has been shown to target the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The effects of ethyl 4-chloropicolinate are dose-dependent, with higher doses being more effective in inducing apoptosis. This drug inhibits the production of hydrogen peroxide, which can lead to cell death by apoptosis if it builds up within the cell. Ethyl 4-chloropicolinate also alters the morphology of cancer cells and induces differentiation into normal cells, reversing tumorigenesis. The pharmacological mechanism for this drug is not well understood but may be due to its ability to inhibit Golvatinib, an enzyme involved in amide synthesis, or its ability to bind fluorine atoms from hydrogen peroxide.
