N-Methoxy-N-methylhexanamide is an indolizidine alkaloid that is the product of an asymmetric synthesis. It has shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth and its binding to DNA may be responsible for this effect. N-Methoxy-N-methylhexanamide inhibits protein synthesis by binding to prokaryotic ribosomes, which inhibit the initiation phase of protein synthesis. This inhibition prevents the production of proteins vital for cell division. The compound also inhibits RNA polymerase activity in eukaryotic cells.
