2-{[(Furan-2-yl)methyl]sulfanyl}acetic acid (FSAA) is a synthetic chemical that was originally used as a pharmaceutical agent. However, it has been found to be an effective fungicide and insecticide. FSAA is a white crystalline compound that is soluble in water and n-hexane. It can be easily purified by recrystallization or filtration. FSAA reacts with the hydrogensulfate ion to produce sulfur dioxide and acetic acid. The reaction solution must be kept cold at all times to prevent the formation of hydrogen sulfide gas. The residue from this reaction is reactive and may cause burns on skin contact.
