16-Epivoacarpine is a koumidine, indole alkaloid found in the plant sources Ephedra distachya and Ephedra equisetina. 16-Epivoacarpine has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 16-Epivoacarpine also has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is a bacterium that causes tuberculosis. 16-Epivoacarpine has been found to have potent cytotoxic effects on tumor cells in vitro.
