Acitazanolast is an antifungal agent that has been shown to have high resistance to human pathogens. Acitazanolast inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to ergosterol, a sterol found in fungal cell membranes. Acitazanolast has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol and is active against Candida albicans, Coccidioides immitis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The optimum concentration for acitazanolast is 0.5-2 µg/mL and it should be used in combination with other antimicrobial agents such as surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate or benzalkonium chloride.
