Product Information
Curcumin is a phenolic compound that has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The compound exists in two forms, curcuminoids and curcumin. Curcuminoids are the yellow pigment found in turmeric root and curcumin is the main component of this group. Curcuminoids have been studied for their biological activity against cancer, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and other conditions. Experiments with these compounds have demonstrated that they can stimulate immune cells such as macrophages and natural killer cells. Curcuminoids are also potent inhibitors of bacterial growth. They inhibit the synthesis of proteins by binding to ribosomes at the site where protein synthesis begins. In addition, curcuminoids inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α) that are important in chronic inflammation and cancer progression.
