4-Chloro-7-methoxy-6-nitroquinoline-3-carbonitrile is a potent antibacterial agent that has been shown to be effective against multidrug resistant bacteria. It has been shown to be active against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, including Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli. 4-Chloro-7-methoxy-6-nitroquinoline-3-carbonitrile binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death. This drug also blocks bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes vital for maintaining the integrity of bacterial DNA.
