4-Methyl-5-pentylbenzene-1,3-diol is a compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity in biological systems. It is active against the human papilloma virus type 16 (HPV 16) and 17 (HPV 17), as well as other viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV 1). 4-Methyl-5-pentylbenzene-1,3-diol has been shown to inhibit the gene expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) in tumor cells. This inhibition causes a decrease in the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins by tumor cells, which leads to an increase in tumor size. The compound was also shown to be effective at inhibiting the growth of the human lung carcinoma cell line HL60.
