Acetochlor is a neonicotinoid insecticide.Acetochlor belongs to a class of chemicals called neonicotinoids, which are neurotoxins that interfere with the central nervous system of insects. Acetochlor was first registered for use in the United States in 1983 and has been used on fields, crops, and ornamentals since that time. It is also found in invertebrates, such as earthworms and beetles. Acetochlor has been detected in surface water near agricultural fields at levels exceeding benchmarks established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has classified it as a possible human carcinogen based on laboratory studies with rats.
