5-(3-Fluorophenyl)pyridin-3-ol is a prodrug that is converted to the active form, 5-(3-fluorophenyl)pyridine-2,4-diol (FPPD), by cytochrome P450 enzymes. FPPD is an inducible compound that stabilizes hypoxic cells and inhibits cancer cell growth. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo through mechanisms that are not fully understood. FPPD has also been shown to be a prodrug for other compounds such as 5-(3-fluorophenyl)pyridine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione.
