Tetramethyl-1,2-phenylenediphosphonate is a metal halide that reacts with nucleophiles by substitution of the alkyl substituents. This compound has been shown to undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with electron-deficient alkyl groups. Tetramethyl-1,2-phenylenediphosphonate can be synthesized by reacting phosphite with cyclopentadienyl and methoxy groups in the presence of silver ions. It has been used as a ligand in coordination chemistry and crystal x-ray diffraction studies. It has also been used to synthesize other related compounds such as tetraethylphosphonium bromide and tetraethylphosphonium iodide.
