Product Information
- 1,3-Benzenedicarboxylic Acid, 2-Methyl-
2-Methylisophthalic acid is a colorless liquid that has been synthesized by the condensation of phthalic anhydride with methanol. This compound crystallizes into a mesomorphic form at temperatures below 20°C, and melts at around 98°C. It is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and diethyl ether, but insoluble in water. 2-Methylisophthalic acid is an intermediate in the production of other compounds such as dyes, plastics, and pesticides. It can be modified to produce 2-methylphthalic acid or 2-methylisophthalamide. The mass spectrum shows that this compound contains carboxylic acid moieties and labile groups. Optical rotation experiments show that this compound exhibits a positive rotation for its dissolved form. The melting point was found to be about 120°C using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
