Ethylene glycol mono-p-tolyl ether is a nonporous, ionizable, and alkylation agent. It is used in the production of nanomaterials for photocatalytic activity. Ethylene glycol mono-p-tolyl ether has been shown to inhibit HIV-1 replication with an IC50 of 4 μM. The molecule has also been shown to have no effect on human erythrocytes or cell lines. Ethylene glycol mono-p-tolyl ether can be synthesized by reacting ethylene glycol with p-toluidine and chloroform in the presence of boron trifluoride (BF3). This reaction produces an alcohol group that is then reacted with a chloride ion to produce the desired product. Ethylene glycol mono-p-tolyl ether has been used as a monomer for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes for use in analytical methods.
