Dysprosium is a rare earth metal and a member of the lanthanide series. Dysprosium has a bright, metallic luster and is found in nature as an oxide, or in chemically combined form, mostly with other rare earth elements. Dysprosium(III) acetate tetrahydrate is used for analytical purposes as it has been shown to have excellent luminescent properties. It can be used for the preparation of samples for scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. It also exhibits photocatalytic activity under uv irradiation. The atomic weight of dysprosium is 164.5, the melting point is 2,151 degrees Celsius, and its boiling point is 4,971 degrees Celsius. Dysprosium has a red shift when irradiated by solar radiation and electrons.
