Tetrakis(bromomethyl)benzene (TBMB) is a brominated aromatic compound that is soluble in acid solutions. It has an enhanced reactivity, due to the presence of active methylene groups, which are capable of reacting with electrophiles. TBMB can undergo cycloaddition reactions with electron-deficient alkenes and alkynes in the presence of a cationic polymer to form polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The reaction proceeds by protonation followed by 1,2-addition of the electron-rich olefin to the electrophilic bromide. This process works well with recycled solvents and can be used as a green solvent for synthesis.
