Description:

1aH,2H,7H,7aH-Naphtho[2,3-b]oxirene-2,7-dione is a solvent that is used in organic synthesis. It can be prepared from sodium carbonate and an aliphatic hydrocarbon. This organic solvent has been shown to react with methyl chloride to produce the corresponding methylated product. The reaction rate depends on the nucleophilic nature of the aromatic hydrocarbon and on the presence of copper salt. 1aH,2H,7H,7aH-Naphtho[2,3-b]oxirene-2,7-dione is inexpensively synthesized from n-hexane and can be purified by distillation or recrystallization. Impurities in this compound are removed by treatment with hydrochloric acid in aqueous solution. Allylation reactions have been shown to occur with 1aH,2H,7H
