Nitrilotriacetic acid disodium salt (NTA) is a chelating agent that binds metal ions such as iron and copper. It is used to remove heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, from the body. The binding of metal ions prevents their incorporation into proteins and other molecules, which can cause oxidative injury. NTA has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in v79 cells in vitro studies. Chronic exposure to NTA may be related to degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease.
