Dysprosium(III) iodide is a metal halide that can be prepared by reacting dysprosium metal with iodine. It is soluble in organic solvents and has a low melting point, which makes it useful for infrared applications. Dysprosium iodide reacts with oxygen to form dysprosium oxide and water. This reaction occurs at lower temperatures than other halides and can be used to produce low-temperature infrared radiation. The molecule of dysprosium iodide is hydrated and has an orthorhombic crystal structure. The mass spectrometric analysis of the molecule reveals that it contains three atoms of dysprosium and one atom of iodine.
