Sodium Pyridine-3-sulfonate is an inhibitor that binds to the enzyme and inhibits its function. It is a white solid with a molecular weight of 172.1 Da. The enzyme inhibition process can be reversed by adding chloride, which is transported into the cell and reacts with the sulfonic acid group to form an ion pair. This reaction releases the molecule from its binding site on the enzyme, allowing it to resume catalysis. Sodium Pyridine-3-sulfonate has been shown to inhibit nitrate reductase in bacteria and chloroperoxidase in plants, but has no effect on nitrite reductase in either system. The structures of these enzymes are different, which may account for their differential sensitivity to this molecule.
Sodium Pyridine-3-sulfonate was also found to inhibit carbon monoxide oxidation catalysts when used at high concentrations (greater than 10 mM). Mass spectrometric analysis revealed that this molecule forms a c
