4,6-Dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidin-2-amine is a monosubstituted aromatic compound that has suppressive effects on the growth of bacteria. It inhibits the synthesis of malonic acid from guanidine and peritoneal cells. This chemical also inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA during replication by binding to the enzyme DNA polymerase in a manner similar to chloramphenicol. 4,6-Dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidin-2-amine also has inhibitory effects on protein synthesis. It was screened for its bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and found to be effective at concentrations lower than those required for penicillin or erythromycin. The chemical's inhibitory effects were most likely due to its ability to bind to bacterial ribosomes rather than any specific inhibition of protein synthesis.
