Methylenebis(4-chloro-2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol) (MBPCP) is an antimicrobial agent that is produced by the chemical modification of 4,6'-dichloro-2,5'-dimethylphenol. This molecule has been shown to be effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria including Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. MBPCP has also been shown to have a synergistic effect with other antibiotics such as cefotaxime and erythromycin. MBPCP is stable in reconstituted form, but can degrade to form toxic products when it is heated or exposed to light. The degradation rate of this molecule can be slowed by adding antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). MBPCP has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on plant tissue and certain inflammatory diseases in animal models.
