(E)-4-Benzylidene-2-phenyloxazol-5(4H)-one is a fluorescent compound that can be used in optical sensors. It has two conformations, one of which is protonated at the benzylic position and the other is not protonated. The protonation state depends on the pH of the solution. When (E)-4-benzylidene-2-phenyloxazol-5(4H)-one is in an acidic environment, it will be protonated and emit light at a wavelength of 519 nm. When it is in a basic environment, it will not be protonated and emit light at a wavelength of 498 nm.
