It has two conformations, one of which is protonated at the benzylic position and the other is not protonated. The protonation state depends on the pH of the solution. When (E)-4-benzylidene-2-phenyloxazol-5(4H)-one is in an acidic environment, it will be protonated and emit light at a wavelength of 519 nm. When it is in a basic environment, it will not be protonated and emit light at a wavelength of 498 nm. This compound can also be used as an immobilized sensor to detect formic acid emissions from animal waste or plant leaves.
